Benefits

The Stylite Gridboard Insulation offered the following key benefits to our client:

Problem

Several canal-side buildings in Mirfield, including the gatehouse and malt house, which were originally built in the 1800’s had not been used for years. The buildings and surrounding area were dilapidated and in need of regeneration.

Our multi-award winning client received planning permission to demolish the buildings and build new luxury retirement living apartments for the over 55s.

Client Requirement

As part of the project their was a requirement to provide modern, energy efficient apartments. With this in mind, and having researched other methods of heating, the client wanted to install underfloor heating as it is considered an energy efficient way to heat a home.

It would also allow the floors to be insulated in order to meet current Building Regulations.

Design Solution

The architect specified Stylite Gridboard Underfloor Heating Insulation which consisted of 100mm thick PlusTherm Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) insulation with a grid patterned layer of woven polypropylene laminated to the surface.

The underfloor heating pipes would be fixed to the gridboard with clips and then to complete the system a 65mm screed would be poured on top to provide the finished floor surface.

“We were surprised at how easy the Stylite Gridboard was to install, each board was very light to carry and easy to cut to shape on-site. The membrane overhang was a handy feature and ensured we got a good seal between boards for when the screed was applied.”

Result

The PlusTherm insulation provided an excellent thermal conductivity of 0.030W/mK helping the architect meet the required u-value for the floor. Meanwhile the grid membrane, with increments of 50mm, allowed the installer to quickly and easily position the underfloor heating pipes whilst also acting as the vapour control layer.
